A beautiful rug can enhance the look and comfort of any room. While these pieces are made to be durable, being underfoot can take a toll. This is especially true if you have children or pets or if they're placed in a high-traffic area of your home. If your favorite rug gets a hole, don't despair. Rug repairs can salvage most items so you can keep your beloved piece and can avoid shopping for a replacement.
If your area rug has a loose string, there will likely be a hole underneath.
First, trim away the loose thread so that it's the same length as the rest of the rug's fibers. While you're performing this maintenance, this is also a great time to wash your rug.
After the rug is clean and dry, select an appropriate needle. A darning needle is a good match for yarn. As you begin to work, avoid puncturing the rubber bottom of the rug. This material is too thick and will dull your needle. Instead, stick to the canvas layer closer to the top. Start to make loops and knots with the needle and the string you removed. Repeat until the area is filled in again.
