To begin, you'll want a garden hose, a bucket, a breaker bar, a screwdriver, and a socket (generally 1 and 1/16th of an inch). Before working on the water heater, you'll also need to shut off the gas supply. Then you'll set the water heater to the pilot setting and also turn off the gas control. After that, you'll want to take a look for any leaks, checking over not just the water heater itself but also any pipes connected to it. Examine the drain valve as well. Checking airflow is also important with a standing pilot water heater. From there, you'll start to check the specifics of your water heater, which you'll want to study more closely before diving in.
