The basic roof lines on a residential roof include the eaves, ridges, valleys, and walls. As you look up at your roof, you should be able to see these distinct features. The eaves are typically parallel to the ground and frequently have gutters across them. Ridges are the high points of the roof where two roof planes meet in a triangle shape. Valleys are the opposite of ridges and form where roof planes meet at low points on the roof. Walls are verticle surfaces attached to the roof.
