Building Your Patios Like A Pro

A patio can be a great addition to the backyard space, creating an awesome area for you, your family, and your friends to enjoy. Just like any project, patios can be done by yourself, but due to the amount of labor and materials involved, it's recommended a professional contractor be called in to do the work. You may have questions about what will happen when a contractor begins work on your patio, and the speaker in the embedded video tells you what to expect from this project.

First, the land below the patio needs to be leveled and graded to ensure a flat surface. Any hills or holes will need to be filled with soil. Just a soil foundation won't be enough to entirely support a heavy brick patio, however. It's important that a layer of gravel be laid down to fill in any remaining holes and create a solid base for the bricks. Next, your brick of choice finally goes down. These bricks can be purchased pre-cut from a supplier, or cut to size by the installer during construction. An optional edging can go around the outside of the pavers, and specialty sand is added between the cracks to help protect against water and weather. All your patios should be done in this fashion, or trusted to an experienced masonry contractor.
